HSPU and Strict Press
When executing the Handstand Push-Up (Strict, Kipping, or Deficit), it is important we think about this movement just like we do a Strict Press (with a barbell).
- You must stay TIGHT. The rib cage needs to remain pinned down to the pelvis. Think HOLLOW BODY. We talk about this during strict press (stand like a statue, squeeze your butt, tight core etc), and you must remember every piece of this when it comes to Handstand Push-Ups.
- Create a tri-pod when your head is on the floor. Often athletes head and hands are in one straight line when their head is on the floor. Think about your strict press and where your grip is in relation to your head in the rack position. This is the start of your handstand push-up, and your strongest pressing position.
- Elbows pointed to the wall on opposite side of the room, not out to sides.
- Fingers screwed outward, just like in regular push-ups. This will help keep your elbows pointed in the correct direction.
